The Maapsa Benefit Concert at Carnival City on Saturday was a great success and attracted hordes of jazz lovers from all over the country.
Some of the most memorable performances witnessed in recent months featured the Jaziel Brothers, Thandiswa Mazwai and Hugh Masekela. The concert also marked Masekela's 70th birthday and the launch of his new album Phola.
The Jaziel Brothers were on stage first and they mesmerised many a fan with their favourite tunes.
The moment most fans were waiting for arrived when Mazwai went on stage, and performed like a spiritually possessed person. Her act was tight, she commanded respect and made everybody feel her presence.
She played songs from both her albums and the crowd loved it.
However, the main man - Masekela - did not disappoint. He started off with a slow but great tune from his new album before going straight into his old favourites which had the crowd dancing and singing along. Bra Hugh moved the house with his authoritative performance which demonstrated he is miles ahead of his peers, especially in live performances.
