Why Hlongwane quit Cope

The Xhosa nostra that allegedly controls Cope forced the party's head of elections campaign Mlungisi Hlongwane to quit and rejoin the ANC.

The ANC had planned to parade Hlongwane, pictured, at Radio 702 studios in Sandton yesterday, but the station declined to host the occasion because the announcement was not of "national importance".

While it was being decided where the briefing should be held, the driver of ANC's head of Policy Jeff Radebe slightly dented the vehicle of 702 presenter John Robbie.

The briefing ended up being held in the parking area.

Hlongwane accused former Scorpions boss Bulelani Ngcuka as the mastermind of the Xhosa clique that determines the leadership and direction of Cope.

He alleged that Ngcuka influenced the decision to impose Mvume Dandala as the presidential candidate.

He said Ngcuka and businessman Saki Macozoma were influential in how the organisation was managed.

"A group of Xhosa-speaking leaders have embarked on a secret strategy to place only Xhosa-speaking leaders at strategic political centres," said Hlongwane.

Cope spokesperson Sipho Ngwema said Hlongwane was long identified as an ANC mole within the party.

He said Hlongwane in his position as head of elections deliberately embarrassed the party on several occasions.
