The parents of a rugby player who apparently died of head injuries say they will not question the circumstances of his death any further.

They also initially resisted police offers to have a postmortem conducted on the schoolboy's body.

But police said yesterday that they had managed to persuade the parents that an autopsy should be performed today - before the the teenager was cremated at Roodepoort Cemetery.

Seventeen-year-old Uhuru Joyi failed to wake up on Sunday after complaining of pains after playing in a rugby match on Saturday.

The boy's father, Mvuyo Mhangwane, said they all "just wanted closure" about Uhuru's death and had been worried a postmortem might give results that would necessitate legal action.

Allen Glen High School had a memorial service for their first team star winger yesterday.

Family and friends broke down while sharing moments they had with Uhuru.

Uhuru, or "Uzzi", as he was affectionately known, died on Sunday after complaining about headaches that he told his mother about after participating in rugby practices throughout last week.
