Three men were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms in separate incidents in the Hillbrow precincts, police said.

Captain Bhekizizwe Mavundla said yesterday two of the men, aged 23 and 30, were arrested in Berea by crime prevention patrol police.

The three men were part of 88 suspects arrested between Wednesday and yesterday in a crime prevention operation around Hillbrow.

"The police were doing a crime prevention patrol when they saw suspicious-looking men and stopped them.

"A 9mm pistol with its serial number removed and eight rounds of live ammunition were recovered," Mavundla said.

The men were also allegedly found in possession of a knife and some fake R200 notes.

They were charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, a dangerous weapon and counterfeit notes.

In another incident on Empire Road in Parktown, a 24-year-old was allegedly found in possession of a firearm and seven rounds of live ammunition. - Sapa
