Life was peaceful for Priscilla Ntombentsha Makhubela until she was left holding a baby in 2002.
Now Makhubela is asking Sowetan readers to help her locate Sindiswa Cangani, who disappeared after leaving the six-months-old baby at her creche.
Makhubela needs to regularise her relationship with Nicole, who is now seven. She is in Grade 2. She has temporary foster papers which do not make her the child's guardian.
Makhubela ran a childcare centre in Hillbrow, Joburg. One of her clients introduced Cangani to Makhubela and asked her to look after Cangani's baby.
Cangani claimed to work night shifts at a restaurant in Boksburg. She promised to visit the baby at weekends and gave her a month's pay.
Two months later Cangani was traced to Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital where she had been admitted with a stab wound. She signed temporary foster papers and then disappeared from the hospital.
"We cannot find her as she is constantly changing her address in the flatlands of Johannesburg," Makhubela said this week.
"She has never come to visit the baby or pay a cent. I love the baby and want to do things legally.
"Please ask Cangani to call the department of social development so that we can finalise the matter."
