The blockbuster musical Cats is coming back to theatre stages after its tour of the country eight years ago.
Produced by Pieter Toerien, it performed then at Artscape in Cape Town and at the State Theatre in Pretoria.
The show was ground-breaking and launched many of its cast members to stardom on international tours of the Far East. Cats sold out every night.
This time around the musical will grace the stages of Teatro in Fourways, Johannesburg, from September, with a new generation of talented South African performers eager to make a name for themselves.
Cats first opened in the West End stage in 1981 and then on Broadway in 1982. The London production ran for 21 years and the Broadway production for 18 years, in both cases setting historical long-run records. It has become one of the world's best known and best loved musicals.
Based on TS Eliot's Old Possums' Book of Practical Catsand with award-winning music composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber; Cats wasoriginally directed by Trevor Nunn and produced by Cameron Mackintosh with choreography by Gillian Lynne. It has since been presented in over 20 countries and in about 250 cities worldwide.
This year's South African production will be directed by Jo-Anne Robinson with Fiz Shapur as the musical director.
