What triggered the taxi protests?

In the memorandum, the taxi operators argued that:

l BRT was never properly explained to them on how their industry would benefit. They were not consulted on the planning of the infrastructure either.

l The taxi industry was their only business as blacks, and that the BRT will take away their independence.

l For the past two years when the project was planned, the City of Joburg never offered them any training as drivers, or courses to upgrade driving licences.

l Taxi operators would be paid per kilometre and not per commuter, which is contrary to their present system.

l It is impossible for BRT buses to absorb all the taxi drivers.

l The project will only benefit a few people, while the poor will still remain poor.

l Those who ply their trade in and around taxi ranks will be left without an income.
