South African boxers William Gare and Mlungisi Dlamini, and promoter Blacky Seoe were saluted by the World Boxing Foundation at its recent awards ceremony for 2008 in Australia.
Gare and Dlamini hold the WBF's super middleweight and lightweight belts, and fight under Seoe's Robs Promotions.
Gare was voted World Boxer of the Year by the WBF for last year while his first defence against Les Sherrington at the Kroonstad Military Base in Free State was voted Africa's fight of the year.
Boxing SA recognised his ability by voting his second defence against Jindrich Velecky from the Czech Republic as its fight of 2008.
"I grew up under Jacob Matlala and I wondered what kept him going when he was written off after 30," Gare said yesterday.
"I realised as I grew older that nothing beats hard work. Most boxers who became legends were not all that skilful but hard workers."
Dlamini was voted Boxer of the Year in Africa.
The fighter from Esikhawini in KwaZulu-Natal won the lightweight strap in 2007. He has defended it three times, chalking up short route wins over Jairo Moura dos Santos and Diego Martin Alzugaray, and a points win over a clearly outclassed Gary St Clair in Parys.
Seoe, from Free State, was voted Promoter of 2008. He shared the same honour with Pat Molefe at Boxing SA's awards.
Meanwhile, the ding- dong battle for the WBF cruiserweight title between Zack Mwekassa and Joseph Nagy, which was staged in Secunda by World Sports Promotions, won the WBF's World fight of 2008.
Hungarian Nagy got up from the canvass five times to flatten a dog-tired Mwekassa, who is from the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the sixth round.
