Maritzburg make it five wins in a row

Maritzburg United bolstered their chances of surviving relegation from the Absa Premiership when they beat Bidvest Wits 2-1 at Woodburn Stadium in Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

It was United's fifth straight win. The Team of Choice were the first to score through Sipho Mngomezulu after he was put through by Siphiwe Mkonza in the 22nd minute.

The goal was well received by chanting United supporters, but their smiles were wiped away five minutes later when The Clever Boys equalised through Tebogo Langerman.

The visitors piled the pressure on United and won two quick free kicks but Justin Miller and Sifiso Myeni did not make use of them in the 30th and 32nd minutes.

Wits' goalie Energy Murambadoro made an excellent save when he denied Collen Zimbaa goal in the 48th minute.

David de Oliveira had a chance to put the visitors ahead a minute later, but the Brazilian misfired.

United won a penalty when Rene Richards was adjudged to have fouled Zimba in the 86th minute and Bageta Dikulu made no mistake from the spot.

It was a good return for Dikulu who did not play when United beat Santos 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup last 16 match on Friday because of suspension. - Sowetan reporter
