Police opened fire to disperse protestors at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Howard College campus yesterday.
At the time of going to press it was not clear how many students had been injured in the skirmish with the police.
The chaos started when the protesting students forced other students out of lecture rooms on campus to join their protest.
Executive dean of students Trevor Wills yesterday confirmed the protests and said that the issues needed to be dealt with by the vice-chancellors responsible for the registrar.
The IFP Youth Brigade (IFPYB) is accusing the police of shooting at students wearing IFP T-shirts.
IFPYB acting chairperson Pat Lebenya-Ntanzi lashed out at the police for firing at the group of students who were wearing IFP T-shirts during the protest.
Lebenya-Ntanzi said police shot at the students despite their not being involved in the strike "led by the ANC-affiliated South African Students Congress".
"The IFP Youth Brigade condemns this blatant police brutality meted out randomly at students who had nothing to do with the student unrest," said Lebenya-Ntanzi. "The indiscriminate use of force by the SAPS at Howard College campus is reminiscent of police brutality during apartheid days."
Sasco's secretary at the university, Mlondi Mkhize, was not available for comment yesterday.
The mass strike action led by Sasco at the university began on Wednesday last week.
The students are demanding that the university pay unpaid meal allowances to students who are beneficiaries of the National Students Financial Aid Scheme.
On Sunday, Wills said the issues that caused the delays in transferring the allowances to students' accounts had been sorted out and they would receive the allowances any day this week.
The students are also demanding that the university do away with the exclusion of poor performing students.
