The South African Police Service in Limpopo suffered a double blow at the weekend when two of its members died after a shooting incident.

The couple - both police officers based at BelaBela police station - apparently had a heated argument at their home in Extension 6. The man allegedly pulled out his service revolver and shot dead his lover.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said the woman was shot twice in the head. The man then turned the gun on himself and shot himself once in the head.

Ramatseba identified the dead couple as constables Tleane Koos Sithole, 27, and Tshepiso Mary Mogashoa, 25.

He said Sithole was a detective and Mogashoa worked in the SAPS community service centre in BelaBela.

"We are at the moment investigating the circumstances that might have led to the killings," said Ramatseba.

He said the gun used in the shooting incident had been identified as Sithole's service pistol.

"We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, incidents like this where people kill their lovers and later take their own lives," he said.

"We further urge couples experiencing problems in their relationships to make use of the employee assistance service (EAS) to help them."

The EAS is made up of chaplains, social workers and psychologists, who deal with a variety of problems, he said.

l In May last year, Inspector Freddy Mashamba shot and killed his estranged wife in front of the Louis Trichardt police station after she allegedly told him she wanted to divorce him.
