ANC president Jacob Zuma has promised to clamp down on poor performing members of his party.
Zuma, who was in Langa, Cape Town, on Saturday to commemorate Human Rights Day, said there was no place in the ANC for people who thought they were more important than others.
"The president, ministers, mayors and councillors all need to set an example and show a work ethic," he said. "People who do not work will be fired, because when they are not performing well it is the name of the ANC that is damaged."
Zuma later led supporters in a festive song and dance.
Among the crowd was former DA leader Tony Leon, once a fierce critic of Zuma. - Sapa
