Mbongeni Ngema's latest musical, The Lion of the East, which premiers at the eMala-hleni (Witbank) Civic Centre today, has been bankrolled for R20million by the Mpumalanga government.

Last year there was much speculation about how much the musical would cost to produce.

This week the government still could not say how much it would eventually cost, other than confirm the initial R20million budget.

Government spokesperson Sammy Mphatlanyane says because the musical will travel around the country and overseas, it is difficult to determine its exact cost.

He said the R20million would cover transport, salaries of actors, directors, the producer, lighting design, stage management, costumes, and accommodation for the cast and crew.
