Bongani Nchang and Tshedi Mholo of Afro-pop outfit Malaika will today cycle from Krugersdorp to Potchefstroom in their bid to raise awareness about TB.

The two will also take part in a door-to-door campaign, throwing their weight behind the Healthy Lifestyle Cycle Challenge, which starts at the Keywest Shopping Centre in Krugersdorp from 8am. The challenge seeks to put the killer disease under the spotlight ahead of World TB Day next Tuesday.

"This is a new initiative from the Department of Health, and as Malaika we felt we needed to spread the message that is as frightening as the prospect of catching TB is, thank goodness it is a curable disease. All you need to do is to take your treatment seriously," says Mholo.

"I suppose our involvement stems from our experience with Jabu (Ndaba)," she says, referring to the late third member of the group who died last year.

"He also suffered from TB, and we saw first-hand how he suffered. It's bad and what makes it worse is that these days the minute they hear you are afflicted with TB, they automatically jump to the conclusion that you are HIV-positive."

Mholo says they will perform on March 29, alongside other artists, at the opening of the TB wing of Klerksdorp Hospital.

"I was surprised to learn that TB is still the number one killer in the world. However, if you already have it, you need to look after yourself. Testing to ensure that you do not have TB is the first step towards a healthy lifestyle. TB is highly contagious and you don't want to infect your loved ones."
