Just days after South Coast beaches claimed four lives a fortnight ago, another person has drowned.

The drownings are attributed to high currents at the beaches.

Police spokesperson Captain Vincent Pandarum said cousins Sifiso Ngema, 21, and Thamsanqa Sihle Buthelezi, 22, of Hlabisa in Zululand, were swimming on Sunday at the Scottburgh main beach when Ngema drowned.

"The two were swimming when Buthelezi noticed Ngema getting into difficulty.

"He tried to reach out and assist his cousin who by then had disappeared under water.

"He also got into difficulty and Dillon Joubert, a squad leader at the Scottburgh Lifesaving Club, set out with colleagues to rescue them.

"However, they only managed to save Buthelezi," said Pandarum.

He said Ngema's body was later seen floating after it had drifted out to shore.

The body was taken to the Scottburgh state mortuary where a postmortem was conducted yesterday morning.

Pandarum said the postmortem results confirmed that Ngema's death was due to drowning.
