Jansen van Vuuren was re-elected as Mpumalanga Boxing Organisation (Mpabo) president for the sixth time in succession at the weekend.

Van Vuuren has been president since the organisation was formed in 1994.

"My first mission is to arrange a meeting with the MEC for culture, sport and recreation in the province, Dina Pule, to convince her to come on board and assist us in reviving the sport in the province," said Van Vuuren.

"There are many talented boxers in townships, but the problem is that there are no funds and resources available to develop them properly. The assistance of government will be vital in this.

"Our other plan is to divide Mpabo into three regions so that each region will have its satellite offices that will monitor its affairs and stage tournaments week in and week out.

"Currently, we experience problems of cancellation of tournaments because some boxing clubs struggle to get financial support to travel long distances to attend events," he said.

Van Vuuren said they are also working tirelessly to introduce boxing at schools.

Other officials elected to the executive include deputy president Michael Mthunzi, general secretary Chris van Vuuren plus additional members Wonder Mhlongo, Elijah Mhlongo and Esther Mampumi.
