The South African Police Union would like to condemn in the strongest terms possible the waste of taxpayers' money by the Minister of Correctional Services Ngconde Balfour in his failed bid to block the release of a report by former inspecting Judge of Prisons Nathan Erasmus into the death of an HIV-positive prisoner that the Treatment Action Campaign had already made public.
We are not surprised that he lost his bid because this is a constitutional democracy.
This is a democratic dispensation that is founded on transparency.
SAPU is optimistic that among the tasks that the incoming administration will tackle is making all public officials who waste public funds accountable for their actions.
The concerned prisoner died while he had qualified for medical parole which he was denied by the minister and everybody knows that.
The fact that the minister did not want to be exposed for that is irreversible now. We find it totally unacceptable that he even tried to appeal.
We hope either his legal advisers or someone will be held to account.
We also hope that not only will we witness a change of faces after April 22, but drastic changes in how things are done.
