Fans of African music are in for a good time at Carnival City later this month when some of the country's leading lights perform at a benefit concert.

Called Musicians and Artists Assistance Programme of South Africa (Maapsa) Carnival City Benefit Concert 2009, the gig features Hugh Masekela, who will be celebrating his 70th birthday and will launch his new album Phola, Thandiswa Mazwai and the Jaziel Brothers.

The annual concert is one of a few in South Africa dedicated to creating awareness of and contributing financially to Maapsa's fight against drug abuse and addiction among performing artists.

Supplying an information and counselling service, and facilitating recovery treatment, Maapsa offers an invaluable service to the entertainment industry at a time when easy access to affordable drugs makes substance abuse one of the most debilitating obstacles in the careers of artists.

The concert is on March 28 and doors to the venue open at 6.30pm.
