Police in Pinetown are searching for the killer of Jimmy Mtolo, the local chairman of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco).

Police say an unknown man attacked Mtolo, 66, in his office on Saturday after pretending to be looking for information on a housing project in the area.

Sanco is a national body affiliated to the ANC.

Inspector Solomon Mbhele said Mtolo was with another member of his committee when he was attacked.

"The incident happened at about 8.45am. Mtolo was at the organisation's office when the unknown male entered the office (and) enquired about the housing project in the area. While he was explaining, this male allegedly drew a firearm and fired two shots towards Mtolo, who fell to the floor."

The suspect fled on foot towards Clermont. Mbhele said Mtolo helped to allocate RDP houses around New Germany.

Meanwhile, Jabulani Khanyile, the Nehawu shop steward and activist who was murdered in Nongoma early this month, was buried at Esiqokolweni on Saturday.
