Julius Gxowa allegedly killed reggae star Lucy Dube only three days after being released from prison.
Gxowa, 31, a Mozambican national, had been detained at Heidelberg Prison over cable theft. He was released on bail on October 15 2007, three days before Dube was shot in a botched hijacking inRosettenville, Johannesburg.
Gxowa was later tried, convicted and sentenced to three years' imprisonment for theft while in custody for the Dube murder.
During cross-examination in the Johannesburg high court yesterday, Gxowa denied any involvement in the murder, saying he was with his girlfriend, Lebogang Makgatle.
"I made a living by selling cellphone accessories. On that morning, I went to town to buy stock, came back and stayed at home throughout the evening," he said.
The state alleges that Gxowa's and co-accused Sifiso Mhlanga and Mbuti Mabe's fingerprints were found at the crime scene.
