Helene Franz Hospital, also known as the "hospital of death" will soon have a new manager after its chief executive Matlakala Maoto was "pushed" to resign.
Maoto, 62, was apparently advised to resign as the hospital's chief executive early last month, soon after Sowetan published reports about the collapse of services at the hospital.
Sources said Maoto was deemed unfit to run the hospital.
News that Maoto was leaving the hospital came to light yesterday during a heated meeting at the hospital between the hospital management and board members, Cosatu, Sanco, the community and the health MEC Seaparo Sekoati.
Villagers demanded that Maoto be dismissed and be replaced by Dan Mosena who was fired from his position as the hospital's board chairperson.
But the meeting was called off after some department officials walked out.
Department spokesperson Phuti Seloba said yesterday Maoto was not advised to resign but did so voluntarily.
He said Maoto cited age and ill health as the reasons and asked to serve his notice period until the end of the month .
Sekoati and Maoto's vocal critic, Sanny Mannya, who is also provincial secretary for Sanco in the Capricorn region, said it was "good riddance" because Maoto should have resigned some 10 years ago.
Mannya said Maoto should be investigated for criminal charges after the death of 172 patients in the hospital "due to his negligence".
