Watch out deceitful building contractors - this is the message from the Department of Housing and the Special Investigating Unit as they gear up for a crackdown on the industry.

The two bodies signed a service agreement in Johannesburg yesterday to investigate building contractors.

The department and the SIU also presented a report detailing the successes in curbing fraud and corruption in housing subsidies.

The department is probing 30000 government employees over their involvement in fraudulent activities relating to housing subsidies.

The SIU and the department said they were confident they would nail the fraudsters as they had achieved an 80percent success rate in previous missions.

The success relates to cases of 1330 government employees, who acknowledged that they were involved in housing fraud that cost the department R18million.

The department's director-general, Itumeleng Kotsoane, said: "The contractors must know we are coming."

SIU deputy headFeik Davids said: "It would be a complex job to go after building contractors because of the number of people involved."
