The government must make intensive efforts to reduce the carnage caused by accidents on our roads.

With South Africa's roads rated among the most unsafe in the world, the latest initiative by the Johannesburg municipality to crack down on reckless motorists should be welcomed.

Operation Nomakanjani, a joint campaign by the local metro police and the SA Police Service, was launched this week to rid the city of arrogant and reckless drivers.

Speeding motorists and those who disregard traffic rules will be arrested, kept overnight in police cells and their bail fixed at R2000.

We hope the campaign will rid the society of dangerous drivers and help save many lives on our roads.
