Police in Umlazi have launched a manhunt for a man who severely assaulted his girlfriend and the mother of his five children before shooting her four times, killing her.

The incident happened in the township's H section in full view of the neighbours.

The victim has been identified as Zanele Mbhele.

Mbhele, 33, and the suspect are understood to have had ongoing problems, resulting in frequent quarrelling.

Umlazi police spokesman Captain Khephu Ndlovu said yesterday that the two had an argument on Monday afternoon and the man left, only to return to the woman's house on Tuesday morning and started assaulting her.

"We don't know what the argument was about, but after assaulting her inside the house, he apparently dragged her out to the street and continued assaulting her. "He then produced a firearm and shot her four times. She died on the scene," said Ndlovu.

Ndlovu said that after shooting the woman, the man ran away.

"We are currently searching for him and we hope to make an arrest soon," Ndlovu said.

He said a letter written by the suspect was found inside the woman's house, but Ndlovu refused to divulge its contents, saying "it was in the police's possession and would form part of our investigation".

Ndlovu said that fortunately the couple's children were not at home when the assault and shooting happened.
