The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) is intensifying its fight against job losses.

The trade union's three-day national job security conference aimed at tackling retrenchments begins today in Midrand.

President Kgalema Motlanthe and senior government ministers in trade and industry and labour will give keynote addresses on government's social plan initiatives and its expected stimulus package to rescue the affected industries.

Mziwakhe Hlangani, Numsa spokesman, said: "Our major objective is to ensure that all parties contribute on the solution to this crisis.

"Government should actually declare it a national disaster so that this issue of retrenchments can receive the necessary attention."

The conference will also be attended by economic analysts, government delegates, employer associations, labour union federations, trade unions and officials from a host of the non-governmental organisations.

National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) executive director Herbert Mkhize is expected to deliver inputs on Nedlac agreements and sectoral industrial policy institutions and how government proposals should be put into effect to reduce the effects of the global economic crisis.
