New pipeline is too costly

Gauteng Premier Paul Mashatile should contest Transnet's proposed new pipeline tariff that will raise the price of petrol in Gauteng by about 39 cents a litre.

Gauteng Premier Paul Mashatile should contest Transnet's proposed new pipeline tariff that will raise the price of petrol in Gauteng by about 39 cents a litre.

If this tariff goes ahead, the extra cost will stunt business activity and be a heavy extra burden for motorists in Gauteng.

While I support the building of a new pipeline from Durban to Johannesburg, I'm disturbed at reports that at an estimated cost of R13billion, it will be the world's most expensive - four times more expensive than in Europe, and seven times more than in America.

Mashatile should make representations at the highest level to ensure that a new pipeline is built cost effectively, and that inland motorists are not unduly penalised to pay for it.
