US donates R21m to help combat sexual offences

Two million US dollars (about R21million) has been made available by the US government to help train police and prosecutors to handle sexual offences, especially necessary since the passing of new laws affecting such crimes.

Safety and Security Minister Nathi Mthethwa told a media conference yesterday that this was one of a number of initiatives being taken regarding the prosecution of sexual offenders.

He described one such programme designed to support the efforts of the government and society in the run up to the 2010 Fifa World Cup, identifying this country as a destination country for human trafficking in that year. He said that a human trafficking awareness campaign is to be launched by the national prosecuting authority on behalf of the government.

"A national task team has been set up by the departments of Justice, Health and Social Development, and is working on a national action plan to establish policy and allocate departmental responsibility to ensure that South Africa meets its legal and moral commitments," the minister said. - I-Net Bridge
