The Cyprus Women's Cup got off to a rough start for the South African women's football team Banyana Banyana who were hammered 6-0 by England yesterday.

Banyana have to beat Scotland tomorrow to keep their hopes alive.

Regardless of this major setback, team manager Fran Hilton-Smith, pictured, said she was satisfied with her team's opportunities, and said she hoped that the tournament gets easier from now on.

"We hope to improve, going into the Scotland match. The girls are fine, disappointed maybe, but still in it," she said.

Banyana - who at 58th place are by far the weakest team in the eight-nation competition - will still find it hard to overcome the 25th ranked Scotland.

Banyana's last group match is against eight ranked France on Tuesday. The other group consists of Russia (15), defending champions Canada (11), the Netherlands (17) and New Zealand.

The winner of Group A will face the winner of Group B in the final on Thursday. - Linda Moreotsene
