Odirile Mentally and Physically Disabled Home is one of the success stories of Hammanskraal.

The home is situated in Unit D Extension 6 and houses 119 people - from children aged two to adults who are 35 years old.

The mature residents have no other place to go to and the founder, Baby Maphosa, is too kind-hearted to let them go.

There is formal teaching from Grade 1 to Grade 4 and skills training in sewing, crafts, carpentry, upholstery and domestic work.

Mama Angel arrived yesterday during the home's sports day to deliver nappies, cleaning materials and two microwave ovens.

"We have two qualified teachers who teach the children arithmetic, reading and writing. Today is sports day and the children are excited because there is netball, soccer, athletics and tennis," Joyce Selolo, the manager of the centre said.

"The University of Pretoria helps us to train staff and volunteers because we have to stimulate the children, and help them with exercises and singing," Selolo said.

The home has 64 staff members, but only the four teachers earn a salary.

Maphosa said she had a call from God to help the disabled.

"I was looking after street kids when I realised that disabled children also needed help. I was frightened of them at first, but gradually came to love them," she said.

"I started with three children and eight staff. We were fortunate that Telkom, the Carousel and TFMC built the home for us.

"We now also have plans to build a proper sports facility, a hall and a skills chalet," Maphosa said.
