Metro FM is back in KwaZulu-Natal to reclaim its space as the commercial radio station with the most listenership.

This after the Metro admitted there are stations that are giving it a run for its money.

Station manager Matona Sakupwanya says they have not spent enough time in the region, hence they have lost out.

"There are radio stations that are giving us a run for our money. We would like to assure everyone that we are back to reclaim our space," she said.

Sakupwanya was speaking at the pre-party of the summer celebration hit wave, an event the station hosts in Durban every year at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre.

She says they plan to host as many events in the region as possible to get closer to their listeners in the region.

As part of giving back to the community, the station distributed 2500 shoes to pupils from poor communities at schools in Umlazi, Richards Bay, Empangeni and Vryheid. Nationally, 9000 pairs of shoes were distributed by the station.

"Already, thousands of youngsters in the Western Cape, Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape are sporting smart, shiny new shoes, thanks to generous donations from the public and the private sector."

New kid on the airwaves, Igagasi FM, has a million listeners, giving even some best established stations a run for their money.
