A suspended Mpumalanga land affairs employee who was recently released on R10000 bail after allegedly defrauding a white farmer was rearrested after trying to cheat two other women.

Mpumalanga's Senior Superintendent Obed Ngwenya said Cyril Chuene was arrested on Tuesday in Nelspruit after two women, Mary Suliman, 47, and Winnie Wyngaard, 64, reported him to the police for allegedly trying to defraud them.

The women, from Nelsville in Nelspruit, were on their way to KaMkholo Building in Nelspruit to give Chuene R1350 each so he could process their land claims. But workers in an adjacent office warned them off.

"We were very lucky to be warned in time," said Suliman.

Chuene was out on bail after apparently promising the farmer that he would stop black farmworkers from claiming his land.

Police said their investigations have revealed that people from Nelspruit, KaNyamazane, Sabie, Graskop, White River and other places paid money to Chuene for the same reason.

Chuene told Sowetan that he was a director in the land affairs department in Nelspruit but changed his tune when this writer threatened to call the department to verify his claim.

Captain Leonard Hlathi yesterday said Chuene was earlier arrested in a police trap where a white farmer went to pay him the R10 000 at a garage along the N4highway.

People who might have been defrauded by Chuene can call Hlathi and Ngwenya respectively at the following numbers: 082 462 0804 and 082 565 6417.

Chuene is expected to appear in court soon.
