A man masquerading as an official of the Congress of the People is allegedly coercing people into joining the party.

If they don't heed the call, they face eviction from a block of flats where the man is said to be a community leader.

Residents of Frede Park near Brixton, Johannesburg, claim that Rashaad Kenny has been harassing them about Cope, an accusation he denies.

But senior magistrate at the Johannesburg family court Daniel Thulare confirmed that he was approached by a number of people complaining about Kenny.

Ward committee members accused Kenny of being a "political prostitute" who hurdles between different parties.

One of Kenny's alleged victims is Elizabeth Tamela. The widowed Tamela said: "Rashaad (Kenny) has been bugging me saying I must join Cope. I can't think of any party he has not joined."

But Kenny denied being "a political prostitute".

"It is true that I was an ANC member. It is also true that I used to be with the DA. But I have not harassed anyone," he said.

He denied ever joining the Freedom Front, National Party or Cope. Kenny also confirmed being served with a protection order by Brixton police on Tuesday.

Cope spokesperson Onkgopotse Tabane said: "We will investigate and take the appropriate action."
