Young people are given the space and time to express their views on the futility and folly of crime and criminality using music, drama, dance, poetry and prose.

This will be through the yearly Stop Crime Drama Festival taking place in North West this month.

Audiences will be entertained at the Mmabana Cultural Centre in Mmabatho, Mafikeng, with plays that have a strong anti-crime theme, presented by youths from Itsoseng, Lichtenburg, Jouberton, Klerksdorp, Taung, Ikageng, Potchefstroom, Tlhabane, Rustenburg, Motlhabeng, Mmabatho, Mabopane and Pretoria.

The plays are Percy Mothupi's Changes, Mzwakhe Kgagodi's Sex & Caps Equals Aids, Kagiso Montoedi's Dark Side of Life, Moeketsi Mafe's Jozi Maboneng, Rapula Khumalo's Your Face, Lebogang Ntsie's Bokgoni, Godfrey Thobejane's Minister, Deputy & President; Presley Chweneyagae's Cell No 4, and Inno Lebogang's Cheka Daai Ding.

A group of professionals will run workshops aimed at fine-tuning the plays before these hit the stage on March 28 and 29.

The professionals are Kere Nyawo, Xoli Norman, Mpho Siboa, Monde Mayephu, Mzokes Thwane and Mpho Molepo.

Other old hands will also be showcasing their work as guest productions, namely Selaelo Maredi with The Core, Ntshieng Mokgoro with Thursday's Child and Danny Jasson with Black Age.

A number of other established stage, television and movie stars will attend and participate as coaches, mentors and motivational speakers during this nation-building and youth development partnership featuring Sowetan, Absa, Dramatists Against Crime, North West's sports, arts and culture department.

Veterans "Kid" Mabutho Sithole and Boikie Mohlamme will present motivational and theatre workshops together with Mduduzi Mabaso and Mpho Molepo of's Rhythm City, Isidingo's Tina Mnumzana, Generations' Peter Moruakgomo, and Zone 14's Carol Behane; while another Generations star, Seputla Sebogodi, will stage a gospel music performance with his band, G Movement.
