One of two suspects arrested for the murder of an elderly woman at Kubjana village in Bolobedu, Limpopo, has escaped - despite being in leg chains.

The suspect, Jan Moyela, 25, of Kubjana village near Tzaneen, escaped from Mankweng Hospital near Polokwane where he was admitted for treatment after he was shot in both thighs during a chase by police.

Captain Simon Shikwambana told Sowetan it was not yet known how the suspect escaped because he was in leg irons and was under police guard.

The other suspect, Vincent Mahlo, 25, appeared in the Tzaneen magistrate's court yesterday. The two allegedly broke into a house in which Rosina Maake, 76, who lived alone, was asleep. They robbed her of a cellphone before hanging her.

Shikwambana said police were still piecing together information to find out how Moyela escaped. He said the leg irons were also missing.

The elderly woman will be buried on Saturday.

Police say the escaped man is dangerous.

The two men were arrested after a passerby heard Maake's screams and alerted shebeen patrons.

"One suspect was apprehended by residents , while Moyela was arrested after a chase by police," Shikwambana said.

Police have launched a manhunt for Moyela and have alerted hospitals and clinics to be on the lookout for the suspect as he might seek medical help because he is injured.
