I wish a better future awaits these youths

In everything that I do in my life, most of which is depressing, traumatic and excruciatingly painful, there always seems to be an inspirational reason to hold my head to the sky.

In everything that I do in my life, most of which is depressing, traumatic and excruciatingly painful, there always seems to be an inspirational reason to hold my head to the sky.

I have been feeling down and sickly in the past few weeks and my doctor attributes this un-wellness to "lack of sexual activity".

I personally think that I am grossly fatigued and bordering on burn-out.

You must recall that next month my column will be celebrating a full decade of an eventful, historic and resounding existence.

Today marks yet another opportunity for my immune system to be immensely boosted.

I have the profound privilege and immense honour to meet four of the beneficiaries of the Lucky Mazibuko Scholarship at Rosebank College in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

The cherry on top is that I will also address the students in general, with the sole aim of motivating and helping them to accomplish their aspirations.

The Lucky Mazibuko Scholarship, in partnership with Rosebank College, was initiated a few years ago to the tune of a cool R1 million.

It is an inexplicable miracle of life that I have been afforded the responsibility and the noble privilege to open doors and create avenues for disadvantaged young people to pursue their education at tertiary level.

These are aspirant youngsters who are talented, who possess amazing intellectual potential and who, through no fault of their own, would not be able to further their studies.

In fact, some of them would be left to rot in their poverty-stricken homes.

And, God forbid, some of them would end up being swallowed up in the corrupt world of crime, prostitution and vanity.

Therefore, I feel truly blessed that through the immeasurable generosity of God, the worst sinner such as myself has been appointed to present this amazing window of eternal hope to my fellow countrymen and women.

My greatest wish is that young people would grow up to be better people in our country.

Most importantly, I pray that they could learn to appreciate this act of selflessness, simplicity and humility.

I wish to impress upon them that the inherent purpose of all our lives is not how much personal material one has accrued, but is measured by how much value we have added to the meaningless lives of those who may be less privileged than ourselves.

It is imperative that all our children understand and accept that the greatest honour in life and out of life is derived from changing a desperate frown into a smile.

This emanates from turning dust into a cherished piece of gold.

As I address these children of the universe, the children of God, my children, inadvertently I will also be receiving a much-needed dose of life from their sparkling eyes as well as from their renewed spirit of life.

I will hug as many as I possibly can because I religiously believe that the warm touch of a child is a true blessing from God.

May God richly bless and keep all my children.
