In a nutshell, the new Audi Q5 is a smaller version of the Q7, but for those who have always wanted an Audi SUV but could not afford the Q7, the Q5 fills that gap.

Launched in Cape Town last week, the Q5 proved that it deserves to be a member of the Vorsprung family.

The similarities of the Q5 and its bigger sibling cannot be ignored, but the Q5 has its own charisma and it tells a story of Audi's new design language.

A direct competitor of the BMW X3 and the newly launched Volvo XC60, the Q5 is expected to be highly competitive.

Compared to the BMW X3, the Q5 will excel because its entry model is R10000 less than the X3's base model.

And the specifications list is truly impressive.

Fitted with Audi Quattro all-wheel drive, the small SUV drives like a dream, sticking to the tar like a large sedan.

During the launch we also drove on dirt roads, but not the types that would make you rate the Q5 up in the league of the Toyota Fortuner or the Land Rover Discovery.

The Q5 combines the dynamic appeal of a sports sedan with a versatile interior and multiple capabilities, aimed at both leisure and family use. It can be described as the perfect vehicle for an active lifestyle.

The large, single-frame grille dominates the front, and the headlights can be supplied with xenon-plus bulbs and LED daytime running lights as options. The rear lights also feature LED technology.

The profile is dominated by the large wheels and rising lines and an elegant roof contour, crowned by flat roof rails, accentuates the slim, coupé-like appearance.

The wraparound tailgate, like the bonnet, is made from lightweight aluminium.

There are two body packages.

The S-line exterior package creates an even sportier look, while the off-road style package has a more gritty appearance, thanks to the underbody stone guard at the front and rear, and the 19-inch wheels.

The cockpit is clearly biased towards the driver. All controls can be operated with ease, while the build quality is uncompromising.

The Q5 was launched with four engines - two petrol and two TDI units.

All are direct injection units, and three of the four are enhanced by turbocharging features.
