Police have arrested four suspects for the murder of IFP councillor Mfanafuthi Elliot Maphumulo of Gingindlovu in what they describe as taxi-related violence.

A fifth suspect was allegedly killed by his colleagues after a disagreement about payment for the hit.

Maphumulo, 50, was shot four times and killed at his homestead in Mananda Reserve last week.

Superintendent Jay Naicker said members of the political violence task team under Senior Superintendent Simon Madonsela made the breakthrough after intensive investigation.

"It is alleged that after the attack on the councillor, one of the suspects was murdered at KwaDukuza by his colleagues after a disagreement over payment.

"A firearm suspected to be the murder weapon has been recovered. The suspects have been detained for questioning. All four suspects were arrested in the Sundumbili and Isithebe area in Mandeni. At this stage it would appear that the murder of the councillor was due to tensions within the taxi industry in the area," said Naicker.

"We are experiencing an increase in retaliations related to taxi feuds in this province," he said.

The suspects are expected to face two charges of murder in the Mthunzini magistrate's court today.

Maphumulo's death is the second high-profile murder this year related to taxi feuds.

On January 22 Inkosi Mbongeleni Zondi of Umsinga was ambushed and killed.
