Police in Tzaneen, Limpopo, are investigating the murder of a 76-year-old woman who was found hanged in her home at the weekend.

Two men, both aged 25, have been arrested for her killing.

The woman was found hanged with a rope on the roof of her house in Kubjana village in the Bolobedu South area on Saturday afternoon.

Tzaneen police spokesperson Captain Simon Shikwambana said the pensioner was alone in her house when the two men broke in.

They then robbed her of her cellphone. A passerby heard her screaming for help at about 5pm and rushed to a local shebeen where she told the patrons.

They rushed to the house and whey they arrived they found the suspects trying to escape through a window.

Shikwambana confirmed the incident. He said the two suspects were apprehended by angry members of the community and were handed over to police.

The suspects then tried to escape and community members joined police in chasing after them. One of them was arrested.

The second was arrested after he was shot by police as he was fleeing.

"We do not know what other things the suspects might have stolen. Investigations are still in progress," Shikwambana said.

The other suspect was admitted to a local hospital for treatment.

Shikwambana said one of the suspects will appear in the Tzaneen magistrate's court today.

The injured one will have his date in court as soon as he recovers.
