Strydom takes a chance with Lefele

Trainer Gert Strydom has put his reputation on the line by agreeing to master Tshepo Lefele's corner when Lefele defends the South African mini flyweight belt against Sakhumzi Mqadaru at Nasrec Arena tonight.

He accepted a request from Nick Durandt last Thursday yet Strydom and Lefele hardly know each other.

They did not have even a single workout together during Lefele's preparations. Strydom will be assisted by Kenny Mabunda and Damien Durandt (Nick's son).

Nick is in Mexico where his other charge, Simphiwe Nongqayi will fight Francisco Arce for the IBF's super flyweight number one spot tomorrow night.

The fight tonight will be Lefele's first defence, since he won the belt from Gideon Buthelezi in September last year.

An observation from previous outings is that the champion's chin is suspect. But he is a clever boxer who knows his way around the ring.

Not much is known about Mqadaru who will be guided by Lennox Mpulampula.

Their fight will be broadcast live on Blow by Blow at 9.30pm.
