Slain by indifference

Patients are still dying while those responsible for a "hospital of death" bicker over who is responsible.

Patients are still dying while those responsible for a "hospital of death" bicker over who is responsible.

The bureaucrats' eagerness to offload responsibility for the shameful conditions at Helene Franz Hospital in Limpopo just proves their ineptitude. These bumblers don't even have the decency to fix the problems before covering their behinds.

Between October and December 2008 172 patients died in this hellhole.

The provincial health department blames maladministration for the collapsing services and infrastructure and says it won't allocate an emergency budget to fix the problems.

The hospital's managers and board want more money to provide patients with clean bedding, establish hygienic conditions in the kitchen, repair the mortuary and to eliminate the stench of death that pervades the place.

But no one is buckling down to the reality that hundreds of patients are dying at Helene Franz because it fails to provide the basic services expected of a hospital.

Bush clinics operating in impoverished areas maintain a higher standard of hygiene than the apathetic staff can sustain at this cesspool of indifference.

This cast of sorry characters might at least stop killing patients before gunning for rivals.
