KwaZulu-Natal's department of local government and traditional affairs has placed all municipalities in the province under its watchful eye after receiving reports that some municipalities were using council resources "for party political activities".
There were also allegations that civil servants were being coerced to campaign for a political party.
The move comes after reports that in the Mbabazane municipality at Escourt staff members were instructed to close offices and assist councillors to campaign for the IFP.
MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu said: "The department has decided to monitor municipalities and any municipality found to have contravened the law will face the consequences for violating the code of conduct.
"We also call on all municipal employees to report any attempt to force them to campaign for political parties."
