Two suspects arrested after they were found allegedly exhuming the body of an elderly woman will appear in the Seshego magistrate's court today.
One of the suspects, alleged to be the deceased's son, told onlookers at Ga-Chokwe village in Moletji outside Polokwane on Tuesday he was looking for keys inside the coffin. The two, aged 18 and 28, were charged with violating a grave.
A relative of the deceased woman called the police after community members summoned him to the cemetery when they spotted the suspects digging up the grave.
Sergeant Mothemane Malefo of the Seshego police said the woman, 66, was buried in December. The woman's remains have since been taken to a local government mortuary.
"A forensic test will be conducted before the body is reburied," Malefo said. Local residents are up in arms over the incident.
Headman Jeremiah Chokwe warned his community to be on the lookout for people who tamper with graves.
