The Independent Complaints Directorate has completed its investigation into the death of a 25-year-old Umlazi woman allegedly killed by police three years ago.

The case has been referred to the provincial directorate of public prosecutions.

The family of Nomthandazo Ngcobo claimed she was shot when police tried to disperse angry residents protesting against their local councillor in E Section, Umlazi.

Police insisted they had used rubber bullets, but a postmortem found that Ngcobo was killed by a live round.

"The docket was handed over to the directorate on Monday for a decision on the prosecution of the fingered officers," said ICD spokesman Dikeledi Phiri.

Nomthandazo's mother Busi Ngcobo last week said she feared the matter would be swept under the carpet.

"I want those responsible to answer before the courts."
