Divers are searching for the body of a 23-year-old student who is believed to have drowned at Pennington Beach in KwaZulu-Natal.

Luvuyo Duda, from Eastern Cape, was part of a 30-member group of Firefox, a youth wing of African Enterprises, an evangelical organisation based in Pietermaritzburg.

The group was attending a training course at the Pennington Convention Centre when the accident happened last Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Captain Vincent Pandarum said yesterday that the search for Duda's body was continuing.

"The group had a rest day and went to Pennington Beach to take a break. Duda and some friends were swimming and he was using a body board when he began drifting away from others.

"He was caught up in a strong sea under-current and battled to swim ashore but, according to a fellow student, his efforts were in vain and he disappeared in the waves," said Pandarum.

Since his disappearance, members of the SAPS have made several attempts to locate the body, including an aerial search in a police chopper, but all efforts have been fruitless.

Meanwhile, a premature baby boy born on December 23 last year is recovering at the GJ Crooks Hospital.

The boy was saved from death last Wednesday by two policemen who rescued him from a shrubbery where he had been abandoned at Galway Street, near Scottburgh Primary School, concealed under branches of bushes.
