At least 10 senior staff members at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital will be suspended with immediate effect amid allegations of fraud, nepotism and seeking sexual favours for jobs.

At least 10 senior staff members at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital will be suspended with immediate effect amid allegations of fraud, nepotism and seeking sexual favours for jobs.

KwaZulu-Natal health department's acting head Yoliswa Mbele confirmed that a presiding and investigating officer would be appointed to handle the staff disciplinary hearings, The Mercury newspaper reported.

Staff would be charged with corruption, fraud and defeating the ends of justice, she said.

Her statement followed a demonstration outside the hospital by about 50 staffers, who had called for an investigation into the matter.

Health department spokesperson Chris Maxon said they were ready to take the staff to court and confirmed the allegations. - Sapa
