The Democratic Alliance in Mpumalanga has laid criminal charges against the ANC for allegedly distributing pamphlets portraying the DA as racist.
"On Saturday we became aware of a fake DA pamphlet distributed by Jeanette Mahlangu in the Steve Tshwete area," DA leader Anthony Bernadie said yesterday.
Mahlangu, an ANC candidate in the coming by-election, allegedly distributed the pamphlets to pupils at Middelburg Mine Combined School last Friday.
The pamphlet portrays the DA as racist, claiming the party wants to bring back the days of "permits" and swart gevaar.
The pamphlet ends with the words: "Warning: Do not show this pamphlet to your maids and garden boys ... we need their votes."
"This kind of Mugabe-style propaganda is unacceptable and illustrates the extent to which the ANC will go to cling to power.
"They know that the only way to lure the electorate is by playing race politics," Bernadie said.
He also said the Electoral Act prohibits people from "impersonating" other parties and-or candidates, and prohibits the distribution of false information.
"As such we have submitted a formal complaint to provincial electoral officer Steve Ngwenya.
ANC spokesperson Paul Mbenyane said: "We have never printed pamphlets like that and cannot be associated with that. The ANC cannot account for anyone who does that."
