Communities in Limpopo are still at risk of contracting cholera as the disease continues to spread in most parts of the province.
The provincial department of health and social development said yesterday that it had reported 4714 cases since the disease broke out in November last year and that new cases were being recorded daily.
Phuti Seloba, the department's spokesman, said 41 new cases were recorded at the weekend.
The Capricorn district still leads in terms of new cases with 20 new cases recorded in the district. Vhembe has recorded six, Sekhukhune four, Mopani three and the Waterberg had eight new cases recorded.
"There is a need to channel our resources towards Capricorn to assist them to deal with the disease as new cases continue to come from this district," Seloba said yesterday.
He said much as there were also new cases in other districts, they were concerned that Capricorn's numbers were "ballooning".
The official death toll in the province still stands at 23, Seloba said.
"Communities must start taking cholera seriously, not only when it has hit their family. It is only through their cooperation that we can bring the disease under control," he said.
