Thohoyandou police have opened an inquest docket after a convicted rapist was found hanging at Matatshe Prison on Wednesday.
The deceased, Khazamola Ngomane, was serving a 25-year jail term for rape and robbery crimes committed in Gauteng between 2004 and 2007.
Inspector Nkanukeni Raedane said police suspect that "the convict's deep fear of prison may have led to the deceased committing suicide".
Ngomane, 36, was transferred from Gauteng to Matatshe Prison last year.
"We found him hanging. It appears he cut a piece of blanket, made a rope and hanged himself. We discourage suicide. We appeal to any prisoner with problems to approach social workers.
"Being sentenced does not mean the end of life but a route to rehabilitation. Prisoners must learn to speak out," said Raedane.
