Bay United may be at the bottom of the Absa Premiership log, but they have the potential to spoil Mamelodi Sundowns' winning spree when they host Downs on Sunday at 3.30pm.
The match, dubbed a David and Goliath battle, will be played at East London Stadium. The teams have had contrasting fortunes, with Sundowns in second place and United at the basement.
But United have beaten Downs in their two meetings this season -2-1 in the league and 1-0 in the Telkom Knockout Cup.
Khabo Zondo, United's coach, said their previous victories over Downs are now history and that the focus is on Sunday's match.
"We are aware of their current form, but the boys have vowed to do all that is possible to ensure that we collect maximum points to ease our relegation woes. We will not allow them to avenge the previous defeats," Zondo said yesterday.
United will pin their hopes on captain Duran Francis, Arthur Bartman, Bulelani Matroos and the influential Zamuxolo Ngalo, in the absence of the injured Patrick Mayo and Sakhile Makhathini.
Sundowns skipper Michael Manzini conceded that it will be a tough encounter.
"This is one of our crucial matches that will determine our contention for the league title. The spirit is very high at the camp and everyone is ready for the battle," said Manzini.
Downs are expected to rely on Calvin Marlin, Manzini, Derrick Spencer, Benedict Vilakazi, Esrom Nyandoro and the on-song Surprise Moriri.
Meanwhile Santos, who are still smarting from their 1-0 defeat by Free State Stars, will host Platinum Stars tonight at Athlone Stadium. Kickoff is at 8.
The People's team are in 10th place while Stars are right behind them . The Tycoons' recent form gives them the upper hand .
