A Mpumalanga teacher is taking the provincial education department to court for allegedly refusing to employ him because of his race.

The teacher claims the department declined his application, saying it could not employ "another white person".

Johan Oosthuizen says he applied for a position as deputy principal at Laerskool Staatspresident CR Swart in Middelburg after the first candidate on the short list declined the post.

As a result, Oosthuizen automatically became the first candidate on the short list.

Oosthuizen alleges the department rejected his application, stating in a letter that it cannot employ another "white person" as six management positions were already occupied by whites.

Oosthuizen argues that the candidate who declined the post was a white person and fails to understand why his application was rejected.

Efforts to get comment from the department were unsuccessful.

The matter has been referred to court. .

"It is absurd that the education department is still playing the race card, and that suitable candidates with adequate and appropriate experience are being refused positions, and judged on their skin colour," said the Democratic Alliance's Anthony Bernadie.
